This is back in 1979. Laura is beginning to realize that she can't hate Luke and wants to understand him and how he could have done to her what he did when she knows inside he is a compassionate person.... he's trying to understand what makes her so different than everyone else... no really why he is so different around her. This story about Luke's life and his mother is really relevant to understanding the character... to understanding even now in 2009 how damaged he is, and how he cannot deal with loss. May help us explain why he has let himself be so detached from Laura now that she is in France . Clips property of ABC.
@dgprincess23 - Glory Monty did want to keep him, but the back peddling, like I mentioned below, was because of the fans' reaction to the characters. To keep the this great s/l going, GH needed TG to play Luke, but the s/l was not changed to keep TG.

Oh I worded that ackwardly. I know Gloria Monty wanted to keep him and ultimately it was to let the audience accept the story. With the writing team they had, they were developing the super couple concept. Now the magnitude of the popularity no one could have predicted. I think TG did it beautifully. I don't know if anyone else could have done it like he did, GF was able to hang with him like no other leading lady he's had.

@dgprincess23 - it wasn't to keep TG. They back peddled b/c of the fans reaction to Luke and Laura. Gloria Monty wanted to get younger viewers and used Genie Francis to do so. She didn't change the rape storyline to keep TG - it was to develop a storyline where the audience could buy into the idea that Laura fell in love with her rapist. The word rape was pushed out and the word seduction started to be used to describe the rape.

yes it is. Gloria Monty had to in order to really keep TG. She would have been crazy not to. I think it's a testament to how talented he is. Only a really talented actor could pull this off. It's not just the writing, it's the way he interpreted the words. This is a good example of good writing and acting coming together.
