Efforts to harness the countrys untapped geothermal energy potential are moving full steam, with Menengai area in Nakuru now set to become the countrys next source of geothermal power after Olkaria, in Naivasha. The newly established and state owned Geothermal Development Company is now set to begin drilling for geothermal energy in that area in October this year. NTVs Alex Mwangi, who was recently in Menengai, tells us more.
I think that Geothermal Energy can and does work. We just need to look at the pros and cons before making any substatial investments. If the pros outweigh the cons... we are good. There are some really good websites with alot of info. on this subject, Just google geothermal energy..

Another Advantage
The cost of the land to build a geothermal power plant on, is usually less expensive than if you were planning to construct an; oil, gas, coal, or nuclear power plant.

Other advantages of Geothermal energy are: Some Advantages of Geothermal Energy
One advantage of using geothermal heat to power a power station is that, unlike most power stations, a geothermal system does not create any pollution. It may once in a while release some gases from deep down inside the earth, that may be slightly harmful, but these can be contained quite easily.

I think I was misuderstood. Notice my first comment highlights the successes of geothermal energy in other parts of the world. My second comment just gives some cons.

Dr simiyu,i guess by now you know that you got some real delligent and dedicated haters!...just ignore them and save kenya from this energy crisis!

@immanuel...got to like your negativity!there are some wells in olkaria kenya that are as old as 28 years so your theory of a life span of 10 years does not hold water!

Another big disadvantage of geothermal energy extraction, is that in many cases, a site that has happily been extracting steam and turning it into power for many years, may suddenly stop producing steam. This can happen and last for around 10 years in some cases.

Geothermal heat is extracted from deep within the earths surface, and this is the main disadvantage concerning finding a suitable build location.

Geothermal energy supplies more than 10,000 MW to 24 countries worldwide and now produces enough electricity to meet the needs of 60 million people.
