  • Just got to know this opera through the DVD version just released by VAI (see their youtube channel "vaimusic" for more info). The music is gorgeous, and the story is compelling (based on Gogol).

  • Thanks so much for the tip about the VAI release. This is one beautiful, tuneful opera.

  • REMARKABLY SUNG...LISOVSKY IS FOR SOME REASON STILL UNDISCOVERD BY WAY TO MANY OPERA BUFFS..HIS VOICE IS PERFECT IN THIS ROLE..HE OWNS IT...IT IS AS BEAUTIFUL AS ANYTHING I HAVE EVER HEARD, HIS OTHER 2 ARIAS IN THIS OPERA ARE AMAZING AS WELL..HOW OFTEN DO YOU HEAR PIANO IN OPERA? I LOVE IT...I STILL HAVE MY LP OF THIS OPERA AND IT IS AS VALUABLE TO ME AS ANYTHING I OWN...

  • In this gorgeous extract from one of the most magical operas ever, we have a truly Russian orchestral sound,(fruity horns, dark clarinets, vibrant strings...)and a tenor absolutely born to sing this, all perfectly united in passionate harmony. The sound of this has haunted me ever since my first hearing of the complete work, on this very set of LPs. After many removals, leaving my collections behind, I rediscover this here! Thank you for posting.

  • Εξαιρετικό !!!

  • Yes, inspired curation of this gem. Who knew? BRAVO!

  • Breathtakingly beautifl. How come this opera isn't better known??? This is fully the equal of anything by Puccini for the tenor voice
