After Bealice died, it was Bandit and me in this big house. [0:59]
During the evacuation for Hurricane Katrina, people were forced to leave behind more than just their homes. Thousands of stranded pets were rescued and then adopted into new homes across the United States. As residents slowly returned to try and rebuild their lives, these "Katrina pets" became the center of full-blown custody battles, with people on both sides struggling to do what was right in the midst of an impossibly complex situation.
MINE premieres February 16, 2010 on Independent Lens, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, Independent Lens is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide.

@vanna4animals It wasn't "too late". He got his dog back. If it was so easy to "fight" and take your pets with you, there wouldn't have been any subjects to participate in this film. Obviously it wasn't an issue of not fighting. Sometimes there are things you just can't do. Simple as that. And for a lot of people affected by Katrina - taking there animals with them wasn't an option. It's not that foreign of a concept to comprehend. At least not for me it isn't.
