Film Description: The second feature from director Michel Gondry (Human Nature) finds the filmmaker reteaming with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman for this off-the-wall romantic comedy. Jim Carrey stars as Joel Barish, a man who is informed that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of their relationship erased from her brain via an experimental procedure performed by Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Not to be outdone, Joel decides to have the same procedure done to himself. As Mierzwiak's bumbling underlings Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood) perform the operation on Joel -- over the course of an evening, in his apartment -- Joel struggles in his own mind to save the memories of Clementine from being deleted. Kirsten Dunst, David Cross, and Jane Adams also star.

Love is about accepting the flaws of the other person. Joel and Clementine are both very flawed individuals, as all real people are. When Joel says "Okay" to Clem he is basically saying that he wants to be with her despite her flaws. Maybe this time around it will work because they're both more willing to accept each other, warts and all. That's just my take on this scene. Some may see it differently and that's cool. BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!

I agree with you. I also think that Joel is a character who is desperate for affection. He is willing to accept the possibility of failure in the future if it means 'love' with her in the present. He is 'okay' with the idea of having loved and lost rather than to never have loved at all. He certainly recognized that Clem is flawed, and he is 'okay' with her flaws because of the fact that he recognizes his own, in her. They are a mirror for each others fucked-up-ness. Joel is 'okay' with this.

Maybe that's even a message of this movie: lose your mind, give up ideal images of people, give yourself to love.

This movie is a work of art; a story with a message. The people in it don't need to correspond with real people, and their problems don't need to be classified as mental disorders in order to understand the meaning of this movie. However, I think it's very plausible that romantic love is actually using someone to indulge romantic desires in general. Of course people mostly lose their minds when in love, and therefore people in a relationship experience it as true love.

Clementine suffers from Borderlines Personality Disorder and Joel is an Avoidant/Co-dependent. They use each other and think its love, it's bound to fail again. I used to love this movie...
