It's 1984, and Michael Jackson is king-even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Here we meet Boy, an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his gran, a goat, and his younger brother, Rocky (who thinks he has magic powers). Shortly after Gran leaves for a week, Boy's father, Alamein, appears out of the blue. Having imagined a heroic version of his father during his absence, Boy comes face to face with the real version-an incompetent hoodlum who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years before. This is where the goat enters.

I like this movie and have seen it but I find the stereotypes on this movie that portray Maori a bit degrading. Kids picking dope plants, a stupid father, a nana that leaves the kids to fend for themselves. C'mon not all us Maori are like that!

@edvins88 Uuuuugh, this movie is set in 1968, and we do have internet and Michael Jackson's death was all over the news. We have fast food restaurants AND internet AND TV (colour) etc etc

this looks so cute and funny Sundance came out with some great comedies in 2010. Another film that screened the same year called The Lie (if interested here is their wordpress: bitly .com/ul70sA) has more of a subtle and dark humor. I love the variety of films shown.
