Hysterics and Hypocrites: Anti-gay Laws, War, Rape, and HIV in Africa

KPFA Radio News interviewed me on Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2009, a.k.a., "Hang the Gays" bill, as similar legislation was introduced in neighboring Rwanda. The Rwanda News Agency reported, on 12.11.2009, that: "Legislation is pending in Rwanda, as well as neighbors Burundi and Uganda, that would carry long prison sentences for anyone 'who practices, encourages or sensitizes people of the same sex, to sexual relation or any sexual practice.'" Rwanda's law, like Uganda's, includes prison terms for those who fail to report knowledge of homosexual behaviour, including any expression of interest in the opposite sex, realized or not. Consideration of Rwanda's legislation seems to have since been postponed, but Uganda's is still very much on the table, and, in the international spotlight.

Why aren't all the pro-war pro-"freedom" American conservatives demanding we go to war against these anti-homosexual fascists in Africa? Nuke Uganda! Obviously, only liberals and radicals truly care about justice and freedom and have the courage to fight for it.

Wait a minute, please. Appreciated your first comment, but this is not right. Africans work very hard, just to survive, and Western multinationals steal all their natural resources. And keep in mind that much of America was built by African slave labor.

This anti-gay legislation is inspired by American fundamentalist authoritarians, including "The Family" and Rick Warren, and it's being used to repress the whole population of Uganda.

You'd think those idiots would have a better understanding about differences after their race had been through slavery and racism. Yes, of course, about slavery. I had to go to another post to drive that point home to blatant racists who think "White races" are more "technologically advanced" than "Black races". I have to give dead people the benefit of the doubt. I don't know their views on homosexuality or any other issues. But live people - I do.
