Bill moves a piece of sewer pipe into his office to show how important the ancient material concrete is to our modern world. It, of course, wreaks havoc on his office. This video includes a few short outtakes and an index the series of 14 videos.

  • how did you get this concrete tube in your office?

    :D

very nice videos, by the way.

  • @hilloftheking Note sure if you are joking or not ... but it is forced perspective. It is only 18 inch or so tall. You can see it in the outtake when Jon lifts it ... Thx for kind words!

  • @engineerguyvideo

my fault, I thought it was cg graphics.

  • @hilloftheking np. We do use cg -- in fact in nearly every videos including series #2. In this video we just could not get the look we wanted from an image ... the lighting is really, really hard ... at least for us. I made this in my garage ... had to make three until I got one I liked. In fact it broke when I lifted it, but we decided that this distressed look was good was nice!

  • I guess I found the antics a bit distracting.

  • @tdsthomas Yep ... so we stopped 'em! We made 14 videos of this type, looked at what worked, looked at what didn't and move to a simple, straight forward format found in the 2nd series on the IBM Selectric, Quartz Watch, Pop Can, etc.

  • As soon as you finish telling us (starts at 1:35) people have a misconception that concrete dries, you say, "Now this will take a little bit of time to dry". I know this is one of the first signs of an asshole, but I couldn't help it. Good clip.

  • @hilloftheking they put a small model in front of the cameras, so it looks tall, and they film the video AS-If it was there.

  • @EveryoneIsBoring Everybody needs a Geiger counter in their office!

  • @engineerguyvideo HAHA I'll admit that I thought it was real until I read the comments. Well done! I really wasn't expecting it so I just assumed it was real and wondered how you got that in there. I was picturing carts and pulleys!

  • It is actually a misconception that concrete is finished hardening at any point in time. While the hardening process slows down to almost nothing after 28 days, as long as a water source is present the concrete will continue to harden indefinitely. This is why if concrete doesn't reach required strength at 28 days another test will be performed at 56 days.

Really glad you did a segment on concrete though! :)

  • @engineeringguyvideo Professor, as long as you going on sabbatical could you teach some engineering courses at University of Minnesota? :D

  • u said that it was a misconception that it dried, but u were waiting for it to dry....?

  • Awesome videos, they are very interesting.

I do have one question at the end where you have the links to the other videos one link is missing and two links link to private videos is this on purpose or a mistake? because I would like to see those.

  • thx for ur educational videos. its really helpful keep up the good work!!

  • I never knew he had so many people to make his videos. I thought he set this up by himself in his office. Takes away the character of the video a bit I'm sorry to say :/
