The British composer Edward German (1862-1936) is mainly remembered today for his light operas 'Merrie England' and 'Tom Jones', and original piano works were definitely a sideline. However, he wrote several short pieces, and a difficult concert study. His piano piano pieces are difficult to categorise - they are 'light music' rather than 'salon music' but have individual touches reminisent of his operatic work.

  • Beautifully played; your videos are a joy to watch!

I was wondering if you could recommend any powerful/intense piano solos, similar to Greig's 'Piano Concerto in A minor' (though not as taxing!), as I am going to be performing Chopin's Nocturne, Op. 9 No. 2 in a local music competition and would like to play a contrasting piece! Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks :)

  • @nylesnonsense Thanks for that. I will send you a message with a few thoughts on your query.

  • beautiful

  • Thank you!

  • He has hauntings surprising 'turns': Even the 'familiar' 'simple' sections are suddenly turn to be something else. Beautiful.

  • Thanks for the comment. German was a very fluent composer, and if you get a chance, do hear his operetta 'Merrie England'. It is not staged often because the libretto style is very out of fashion, but the music is very fluent, just like this piano piece.

  • Thanks for your kind comment, Matt.

  • What a lovely piece! It sounds a bit familiar, not sure though.

    Nicely played
