Mark Gilston plays a crooked old time version of the 1893 classic on mountain dulcimer. Sweet Marie was written by Raymond Moore in 1893 with words by Cy Warman. The song became very popular and was featured in the film Life with Father (1947) being sung by Irene Dunne. It entered the southern Appalachian folk tradition as a tune without words and became rather crooked.

Oh Ma'Marie...
My sugar is raw
My sugar is raw
My sugar is raw
My sugar is raw
Sticky and sweet!
Thanks, Mark Gilston ;-)

I've loved this old tune since I heard it in Life With Father.
