Why not "let it down" first? I drilled and tapped an engine crankpin some years ago using fairly bog standard tools. Afterwards the pin was heated to red and quenched in old engine oil. The pin was then reversed in the flywheel so that the big end needle roller bearing was now running on unworn steel. It worked OK but some of these Japanese lightweight generators are basically a disposable item built like a strimmer.

@miggy925 Not at Harbor Fright...that's for sure...

Judging by those stringy chips...that might be pre-hardened chro-mo at 34-36R...but not heat-treated......

The video is called "How to tap hardened steel." I watched the video and I still don't know how. Hmm...

What there is so special??? You can tap in hardened (alloy) steel, but You CAN'T tap in chilled steel!

how come not use drill oil

@sandvik28 It may be lightly oiled, which would explain the smoke given off.

42CrMo4 is a high tensile steel (1000-1200N/mm2), not really a hardened steel.
The long chips from the process shows that. Might be that its hardened in the surface but thats not really a challange for a tap with a 15 degree helix. TiCN coating is fine but get some oil or emulsion in that hole for Gods sake!
