Penetrating the Salem Express Wreck in October 2010.
We dived in from behind the wreck, through both car decks and got out from the side. This video shows full penetration.
Lloyd's Casualty Reports stated the following about the wreck:
"The Salem Express sank after grounding in the Red Sea on 15 December 1991. It was a 4770 GRT Egyptian Ro-Ro passenger ferry, built in 1966, originally certified for 1384 passengers. It was sailing from Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) to Safaga (Egypt) with 578 passengers and 71 crew. While approaching Safaga at midnight in rough weather, the Master took a short-cut which was not authorised for night passage. The ferry struck a reef and sank within 20 minutes. There were 180 survivors and 117 bodies recovered. It was estimated that 464 people drowned in total, many of them trapped inside the ship."
Altough many estimations of casualties are much higher.

Thanks for sharing this vid. Brings back memories. Sad that it was so many lost their lives this was a fantastic dive, I was lucky to dive this wreck not long after it sank when it was gleaming white. Young and foolish we penetrated deep the wreck looking for the duty free (only joking),
Each to their own on the should you, shouldn't you dive ships debate where people have sadly perished. Sooner or later it all ends up as dust on sea bed and the bodies have long gone.

The difference is simply that Thistlegorm was a war ship, that fought in a war, and it's soldiers died bravely! And they were 4 that died btw. But Salem Express sunk due a a fatal Human error, that lead to hundreds of life losses + having bodies trapped in there till this right moment ;)

@Lesdrinky. The Thistlegorm sank in 1941, seven died but there are no bodies in the wreck. The Salem Express sank more recently in 1991 with the deaths of 470 civilians. There are still bodies inside. Thats the difference.

I came across this by chance and was VERY surprised to see it. When I dived it in @ 99/2000 we were told the locals didn't even like people diving on it and penetration was banned.
However, despite outcries of it being a "grave" (which in fact it is.....) people dive on the Thistlegorm so what's the difference?
