The spindle & board seem to wear fairly equally, if they are the same type of wood. If the spindle is harder than the board, it will drill a hole thru the board. If the board is harder than the spindle, the spindle will just get blunted, and not produce much dust.

how tight does the string need to be, mine is really tight, and every time i do it, the stick flies off. What type of string should i use? ex: shoe string?

Your sting may be TOO tight. The string only has to be tight enough to keep from slipping on the spindle. I'm using something like paracord, that I bought in a camping store. You can use anything that isn't too slippery or break easily.
