If you read it all the way through. Then read a little about William Faulkner, you will realize what the story means. The symbolism is that Emily represented the south (never change) and Homer Barron was from the north (modernization, constructive).
I think the father had an affair with a slave girl, hence "a tradition of the south" . She had to hang on to her father . He was the only thing that tied her to high society. she was probably half or one quarter black
