Based on the familiar Grimms' fairy tale, Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel is both funny and beautifully moving; a fantastical story of magic, poverty and the triumph of two children over their foolish elders.
Humperdinck's rich score encompasses everything from luscious Wagnerian-inspired orchestration to touching tunes derived from folk melodies and nursery rhymes. Director Bill Bankes-Jones (Artistic Director of Tête à Tête) takes the opera back to its roots, revealing a traditional tale that's full of enchantment.
