Mystic Aquarium Moment: Baranov the Fur Seal's Jugging Moment: 2/23/2009

Baranov, a 13-year old adult male Northern fur seal is seen in this video showing off a behavior known as "Jugging". Jugging is when the appearance of Pinnipeds (sea lions and fur seals) is resting at the surface with both hind limbs and one fore limb exposed to conserve heat. The term is derived from the fact that their bodies are held in a position reminiscent of a jug handle.

ABOUT BARANOV: Baranov, also known as "Bear" was born at the Mystic Aquarium in 1996. He was recently transported to the New England Aquarium on September 21st, 2009 to join the facility's fur seal colony and establish a breeding program there. It is hope that with an establishment of a fur seal colony, it would propagate the species and continue important research the biology, natural history and conservation of the Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus Ursinus).
