On-board footage from Lakeside Karting circuit near Lakeside Shopping Centre of Round 5 race from PCGB Karting Championship. Had a real dog of a kart for Qualifying session and ended up 14th on the grid - but then had a much better kart for the race and had a great time overtaking 11 karts to go from 14th to 3rd! Only kart track I know which has enough of a jump to get all 4 wheels off the track before the final double apex right hander onto the start/finish straight - can make for some real do-or-die overtaking moves! RM ;-)

  • Great video, good to see you going past so many karts, its always good fun! The only thing I noticed was how many times you hit other karts up the back, quite annoying for the other drivers but it threw you wide a number of times meaning it took a few extra corners to get past people.

  • It may look like i made contact on the video - but in fact i don't. I jump on the brakes late and have a slight lock-up - which looks a bit like contact but isn't - and sometimes when i do overcook it - it makes me run wide to avoid hitting the guy in front! In fact i think i only clipped someone once - and you can tell because he looks over his shoulder. If i had been hitting the others you would have seen a lot more looking back at me - and various hand gestures.........!! RM ;-)

  • Wot was your fastest lap

on dat day yr a very good driver

  • My best lap was 41.835 sec. Don't know if that's any good round there for a 'senior fattie' or not. Was good enough to do well in our race - and there were some quick drivers there. RM ;-)

  • It took me a while to figure out why I lost so much speed around the double right hand hairpin before the start/finish straight. You have to take the first apex a lot wider than feels right.

  • There's nothing better than hitting the jump at full speed and then stuffing it up the inside of someone into that corner just after the landing though........if you're cunning with the exit line you can stop them coming back at you on the start / finish straight too ! RM ;-)

  • You are very right! If you are a good defensive driver then you can get away with it. I prefer taking the quickest line though because it gives you a huge advantage on the straight and it's more fun taking that tight chicane going as fast as possible. I brake so late for that chicane, I am almost past the chicane before I start braking! I remember going through it backwards once!! :D

  • same here, but my favorite corner is the big one coming to the finish line, foot down all the was round and drift out the other side, and my second favorite is the first corner past the finish line

  • Karts have a big single motor - with seat at a bit of an angle as a result - but just as much go as more common twin engine pro-karts. Performance across fleet is a bit variable though - with a couple of particularly slow karts when we went - which was a shame. The combination of the two hairpins and a kart with poor pickup is a nightmare which can only leave you going backwards in a race! RM ;-)

  • I would agree that the double hairpin is the hardest bit to get smooth & fast - particularly as the final exit from the second is uphill! Much easier for the leightweights to get away. RM ;-/
