So the paperclip scientists the US embraced after the war who were previous NAZI's who would freeze jews to death in vats of water so they could determine how long astronauts could survive if they pee'd in their space suit or got a rip in the thing. They let alot of these guys slide and they went to work for what preceeded NASA. A NAZI guard is low hanging fruit when some of the officers were granted immunity for more heinious crimes.
