The da Vinci surgical system mis a robotic surgical system. It is most commonly used for prostatectomies, cardiac valve repair and gynecologic surgical procedures, but can be used for any abdominal or thoracic surgical procedures. It has four robotic arms, three of them are for tools that hold objects, act as a scalpel, scissors, bovie, or unipolar or dipolar electrocautery instruments. The fourth arm uses a camera with two lenses that gives full stereoscopic vision from the console.

While it is called a "robot," this actually a misnomer. The daVinci surgical system is a master-slave system, in which the remote arms only do with the instruments exactly what the surgeon does with his fingers in the controllers. There is no autonomous movement by the machine, differentiating itself from a true robot.
