Chapter 12
Future Earth

FIRST EARTH is a documentary about the movement towards a massive paradigm shift for shelter -- building healthy houses in the old ways, out of the very earth itself, and living together like in the old days, by recreating villages. An audiovisual manifesto filmed over the course of 4 years and 4 continents, FIRST EARTH makes the case that earthen homes are the healthiest housing in the world; and that since it still takes a village to raise a healthy child, it is incumbent upon us to transform our suburban sprawl into eco-villages, a new North American dream.

  • There is one measure by which we will be judged by the people who come after: and that is the health of the land base. That's the only thing that matters. The only thing! They're not going to care if we're nice people. They will care that they have water to drink and that they have food to eat, and that they're not being poisoned, and that the planet hasn't gone to runaway global warming. That is what matters.

  • @Usernametobechanged It's not drawbacks that made people stop building with Earth, it's industrialization. Over time, we have become more reliant on our money to carry us through our lives, and because of that, we become dependent on other people to build our homes for us, while we work.

As a result, the people who build our homes choose the cheapest materials to build with, knowing that we'll pay them to come back and repair anything in disarray. Cheaper to build, too.

  • where do i sign up?

  • Thank you for sharing. I could probably just watch hours of footage of people showing of their own creations. Makes me dream that one day I will be able to be creative by building something like this too.

  • I liked this first earth documentary, I really did, but I have to be skeptical, if adobe/mud/cob houses are so great then why did people stop building with these materials? What are the drawbacks to buiding homes this way, there have to be some, I'm just trying to be realistic it just sounds too good to be true

  • Thank you.

  • FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC! I love it. Thanks you so much for making this.

  • that the idea that you bought a square home and paid for on it for half your life working a slave wage job is now so foreign to me i can't believe i ever subscribed to this artificial construct of 'normal'.

it's a shame we perpetuate this system and deny our creativity as we don't just buy a square box to house our 'stuff'. we put every thing about ourselves including our thinking caps in that box.

this series shows another, healthier path. props to the makers of this film and the builders.

  • Wow.. I would love to sculpt my home into manifestation!

  • A cob oven and cob bunkie are in my future I'm thinking....:)
