If you have a herd of horses in a field..when the hay is spread outthe bottom feeder horses can stay away from the dominant ones and get something to eat too...

@Dojocho Its amazing that you have to convence people of that. It would seem they could figure it out but so many people just dont have a clue. Same thing with cows too and reduces damage to the field in wet weather.

@MrTomSheepy for transport. most cattle ranches buy their hay and if they loaded it loose onto a truck it would be a waste of money. and usually it is baled as it is cut
