Currently in the research phase, Toshiba is developing a new way to view HD media with their Spurs Engine which is capable of real time processing of Full HD and high speed digital image recognition as well as many other features.
The Spurs Engine can handle HD media with MPEG-2/H.264 codecs and includes special operations such as Kao Navi which allows the viewer to search through media by the face that they want to see and Gesture Remote Control that uses simple hand gestures to control your TV.
Hand gestures are recognized by a small camera and various movements allow you to control your videos. By showing your palm to the camera, you pause or stop the video and by making a fist and moving it around you bring up a menu and highlight the buttons, then giving a thumbs up to select the highlighted button.
This control system still requires your hand to be in the proper position and depending on the size of your hand and tone of your skin can have problems recognizing the gestures but Toshiba is fixing these problems. While not yet ready for a product release, the Spurs engine could be sold within the near future.
