WICHITA, Kansas -- A 50-year-old woman stuck in the snow was killed this morning after she was struck by a train. Police are now giving residents advice on how to prevent it from happening again.
The woman, identified as Sandra Joslin, was on her way to work early this morning when her car got stuck on the railroad tracks in the area of 21st and Topeka. Police say Joslin and her 28-year-old son struggled for more than 20 minutes before the train came down the tracks and slammed into her sedan.
Police say Joslin got stuck in the snow around 5 a.m. and was hit nearly a half hour later.
"If you're stuck on the railroad tracks and you can not immediately get that vehicle moved, you need to leave the vehicle there," said Lt. Joe Schroeder with the Wichita Police Department.
According to police, Joslin called her son when she got stuck and he rushed to the scene to try to push her car off the tracks. Police say she should have called 911 as well, because there was enough time to stop any trains rolling down the tracks.
"I would also recommend calling 911, because our dispatchers can alert the railroad who will alert their trains," Lt. Schroeder said.
Joslin's son was not hurt, but police say he witnessed the crash that killed his mother.
Wow. It's a crossing with lights and bells, too. There's no way she couldn't have known a train was coming. Was the car really so important she wanted to die with it?
...I just don't understand how some people think...

Why was she in the car when the train hit? They didn't hear the train coming and she have enough time to get out of the car?
