Here's a quickly edited video of riding with the 72V setup. By the time I'm reaching the top of the hill it's barely moving and I'm having to angle off somewhat. One big problem is that if you loose any ground (your back wheel slips and you loose pace) it really hurts your momentum. The other thing you have to be careful of is when you get to the top of that hill, you have to let off the accelerator just right, or it will really take off (without you!)

Next, this biker passes me pretty quickly while I'm at a stand-still, and I catch up to him easily. I was not using nearly all the acceleration available, either.

Then I finally do the top speed test. I made it to 41.3mph. I've got the nobby tires on, so I don't know if slicks would have afforded me the full 42.

Finally I do an acceleration test on a paved grade. From around 10mph at the bottom I quickly accelerate to 30 and am still accelerating when I get near the top.

I'll see how much I end up riding electrified. If it's much, I'll probably definitely get the Crystalyte 750 watt wheel (150 more watts than this one) and who knows, the Crystalyte wheel is rated for up to 100 volts!

  • Did you fart at 3:47 ? HAHAHAHAHA

  • not really. I just a made a fart sound because I didn't make the turn.

  • Many sites online offer the Crystalyte Hub kit. Is this one?? The 72v -42mph, and the 48v - 36mph. Looks like most people prefer rear wheel hub kits. Search for Crystalyte for video, and on google to find what ya need. I'm getting the dewalt 36v batteries, which are light weight and will charge in less than an hour. I will have to buy 4 chargers though, 1 for each battery. Batteries run from $75-$100, and chargers are about $40. Good luck people, see ya on the road... passing everyone!!

  • It's a Wilderness Energy brushless hub + a Crystalyte 36-72V controller and 2 36V lithium batteries ($400 each), but super light. I've settled on the 16" dirtsurfer as my electric ride of choice and Crystalyte doesn't make the high power hubs in 16", but you might could mount one yourself provided you could get the spokes necessary.

  • That's some wacky shit. Where can I get one?

  • start at dirtsurfer dot com, then you'll have to add a motorized wheel kit. the cheapest one in the US is by Wilderness Energy Systems

  • Hi Well done and thanks for posting I was concidering doing this myself. I would suggest wearing Moto X protective gear because of the high speeds you are doing if you fall its not going to be pretty.

When I was young and had more balls than brains I got a speed wobble on a skateboard and fell at about 40kph I broke my arm so badly the bones where sticken out the skin - even after a 4 hour operarion and lots of steel pins I cant straighten it its 40 deg short of full extension

  • i got to get me one of those...

  • wow I've never seen a motor for the dirtsurfer....thanks for contacting me...SP

  • nice! thats a pretty steep hill for a battery like that (im no electrician)
