This reminds me a lot of the books 'Last Catholic in America' and 'The Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice Cream God' by R. Powers. Both of those are biographical novels about a kid growing up Catholic in Chicago. Same time period, same attitude, same humor. Highly recommended for those of you who grew up Catholic and enjoy that strange mix of nostalgia and laughter.
