The opera of Chostakovitch knew a big success from the beginning. But Stalin made forbid the work.
Rostropovitch leaving for exile took the partition(score) to save her(it) because his wife, Galina Vichnevskaya, had sung the role.
The opera is acknowledged hot.

@missjacko1 I couldn't agree more. She was certainly impressive. No surprise that back then, in 2006, this was to be her major breakthrough. Ventris was an excellent Sergej.

I'm stunned by Eva-Maria Westbroek's performance. IMHO, she's the definitive Katerina. Best of all. This is perhaps the most Russian opera after Mussorgsky. And she's Dutch, incredible.
