My interpretation of this scene is this: He feels growing alienation from his wife He now also finds he's unable to please her in bed which shows his suspicions of her extramarital affairs would be well founded. The Mystery Man is his shadow aspect that now he's projecting on his wife to reassure himself that she's the source of his anxieties, fears and failures.

in response to your essay, i see the mystery man as a black lodge spirit, and fred/pete as a potential evil spirit whom is being groomed for a place in the lodge by the mystery man, im my interpretation the "trasformation" is actually a "possesion" of anothers body and soul. or maybe the mystery man just wants all the tasty emotions that come about due to his interference in the lives of fred/pete and it is he that takes the shape of his wife as way to provoke emotion

he said it. " i like 2 remember things my way not exactly how they happened" n thats what u get in the 2nd part of the movie. he wants to remember himself as a mechanic and found all this dark shit about his wife. he knew that she was a porn star and thatshe was into snuff videos with MR eddi and Andie. he killed 3 people. and he filmed the house. just to remind her that he knew what she was doing. the mystery man is satan, he never said his name thats why he laughs at the party he is the devil

Bill Pullman has never been so well photographed before, or since then I think. What a beautiful actor!
