REGGAE ROAST RECORDS | CATALOGUE NO: RR005 | RELEASE DATE: 7TH FEBRUARY 2011
Reggae Roast Records are proud to presents the Righteous EP. This release features a selection of the most exciting artists from the across the UK Reggae / Dubstep scenes. The Righteous EP follows the massively popular 'Evolution' single, from Ghetto Priest, released in November 2010, which enjoyed airplay from the likes of Rob The Bank, Don Letts and David Rodigan as well as mass club DJ rotations. This release is set to follow suit with its captivating energy and cross-genre appeal. The 4 track EP uniquely meanders between the 4 sub-genres of Roots Reggae, giving traditional Caribbean practices a distinctly modern, UK reworking.
The original track - Written by production team; Evergreen, Landlord & Ruckspin features a gritty MC style vocal from Danman over a hard hitting steppers riddim track. Danman has made his name touring the globe over the past 3 decades, chanting on legendary sound systems such as Iration Steppas and Aba Shanti-i. Righteous is a great example of his uplifting lyrical outlook and enchanting rhyming patterns. This track was both inspired by and designed for dancehall culture, with immense low-end energy and a relentless stepping rhythm. Evergreen, Landlord & Ruckspin, in their mid-twenties are destined to be the next generation of bass warriors, paying homage to the likes of Jah Shaka, while adding a very futuristic, London stance to their productions. This mix has already become an underground anthem in Dancehall's across the UK, building on their 'Jah Rain' release of 2009, which was a big hit across Europe.
RSD Dubstep Remix - Rob Smith is as integral to the Bristol sound as any of his mainstream-approved counterparts. After his legendary work under the alias Smith & Mighty Sound System, RSD is once again at Bristol's cutting edge, aligning himself with the city's inventive Dubstep movement. The likes of local Dubstep dons Pinch and Peverelist have backed the RSD cause already, releasing singles via their respective labels, Earwax and Punch Drunk. Since the late 1980s, RSD has played a huge part in the evolution of Bristol's clubbing soundtrack. His eclectic experiments in Dub, Reggae, Drum'n'Bass and beyond set him up as an obvious forefather of Dubstep. RSD's remix of Righteous is destined for heavy rotation in the clubs, with its pounding drum track and monster sub bass. Expect to hear this one played by the likes of Skream & Rusko over the coming months, as well as multiple rewinds on Rinse Fm and 1Xtra.
Nucleus Roots Dub - Hailing from Manchester, with four classic albums under their belt, Nuclues Roots have become globally recognised for their authentic Dub mixes. They operate in a very traditional King Tubby-esq fashion, using authentic Dub techniques of live Dub mixing. Working with an array of classic effects units, Nucleus Roots have produced a beautifully minimal, Dubwise version of the track, re-balancing elements, using colourful multi-effects to produce an entirely fresh remix of the original, which carries serious bass-weight, while retaining freedom and space.
Dark Arx Remix - Fledgling bass producer Dark Arx has produced a final cutting-edge future bass remix, which builds on his infatuation with Dub Techno pioneers such as Rhythm & Sound and the Basic Channel movement. With 2 highly regarded singles under his belt we are delighted to have this highly original version of Righteous, which brings a forward thinking feel to the EP. Once again exploring the fringes of the Dubstep & Techno, Dark Arx's mix takes inspiration from Detroit & Berlin, fans of Scuba, Peverelist and Ramadanman should take notice of this mix.
This release explores the various reincarnations of the Roots Reggae sound, covering classic Dub, digital Steppers, Dubstep and Future Bass. We believe it to be a poignant release as a resurgence of Caribbean music infiltrates all aspects of modern dance music. Our previous single releases have been very well received by national radio stations and DJs alike, with multiple plays on Radio1, 1Xtra and Kiss100, we hope Righteous will follow suit with its cross genre appeal and dance floor energy.
