Messiah College, Andrew Exner's Senior Recital, April 9, 2010
Street Scene has been called both American opera and Broadway musical, largely due to the successful marriage of modern classical writing (i.e. Puccini) and popular jazz and blues. German-born Weill worked with lyricist and poet Langston Hughes, who took him to nightclubs in Harlem to hear the music he wanted to evoke. The plot of the work concerns the romance between Sam Kaplan and Rose Maurrant over two bitterly hot days in 1947 on the East Side of Manhattan. The action takes place on a backdrop of neighborhood gossip and squabbles. In Lonely House, Sam laments his bitter loneliness even though he is surrounded by many people.

One of my voice teacher's in high school played this song for me, and I wanted to do it as soon as I could. Four years as a long time to wait, but it was worth it.
@JMichaelFowlkes Another pianist was on right before her and was much shorter, but yeah--I never noticed that. Thanks for watching!
