How many different ways can Shakespeare be performed?

No, these aren't supposed to be good impressions. And yes, my American accent sucks. Frankly, I don't much care.

A famous line from Julius Caesar in different forms:

The original
Amateur dramatics
Star Wars
Wedding reception (British)
Wedding reception (German)
Doctor Who (2006 season)
Political speech (British)
Political speech (US)
Business meeting
Game show
1950s thriller
Modern thriller

  • In school we learned a bit about the history of English accents, and you're "the original" accent is a bit off. While that might be the way it's often performed, Shakespeare's English supposedly sounded more like the Northern-Scotland accent of today.

  • Well, kinda, but only in that it had pure vowel sounds and that throat-clearing sound as in "loch". You'd have to imagine Yosemite Sam speaking Scots with a Norfolk accent... you wouldn't have understood a word.

Anyway, by "original" I didn't mean an accent Shakespeare would have understood. I meant a "normal" actor doing a decent job, to compare with all the absurd versions.

  • I really don't get the german wedding reception.

  • I'n guessing you've never had to listen to a German giving a speech.

  • that was so entertaining! and no, your american accent isn't that bad!

  • My American accent has its moments, but as a linguist, I really ought to be able to do better than that.
