This video shows a mockup for a new tab system in Mozilla Firefox. The idea is to mostly maintain the metaphor of "tabs" across the top (or along the side of the page), but to now group them by the page that they were created from. These groupings are indicated to the user by color swatches along the bottom of the tab. Users should then be able to close the tab group, or they can collapse it to save space if there are too many tabs open.
This is just a first attempt, and I'm sure I'll update it in the future. Also, be sure to watch in high quality as it's easier to see the individual details.

To see the images at their actual resolutions check them out on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/20370885@N08/sets/72157618598579560/).

  • Nice idea, although I think that thumbnails should be just one of many options...

  • Eek! Double comment sorry! But you should be able to put the bar anywhere. I'd Love it on the bottom... I kind alike the center being open... of course i have a giant monitor

  • Cool idea. But i your using a mac. Hiss. But the longer you watch this, the better and better your idea gets. Hopefully they watch the whole thing.

  • That is fundamentally a pretty cool idea. Nice concept!
