Wooper is the pokemon based on the Axolotl.
Mudkip is based on Mudpuppies.
...and I just realized how pathetic it is, that I know that....
That said, they're adorable.
Don't feel bad about keeping them as pets either, breeding in captivity is the only thing saving these poor creatures from extinction. If I remember correctly, they're endangered in nature.

I hadn't heard of an Axolotl until I read the excellent book, "The ancestor's tale " by Richard Dawkins. In the chapter 'Axolotl's tale' he explains more about neoteny or progenesis, the evolutionary consequence of which is called paedomorphosis. The axolotl is just an extreme among salamanders. Many species seem to be , to some extent, paedomorphic, others do other heterochronically interesting things. Axolotls treated with thyroxine lose their gills and become dry land salamanders.

@taxic they can get up to 25 years old, sometimes longer, but usually about 15 years ;D
