A film by Biswajeet Bora
Duration : 45 Minutes
Apatani, Tagin, Nocte, Adi , Kanyak, Muria, Maria, Baiga, Bondo, Saora and Gond: These names are emerged from the very soil of the ancient land of India. For they are the adivasis, or the original inhabitants of this land, living for ages amidst the folds of the hills and forests of the Central and the North-Eastern parts of India. It was Dr. Verrier Elwin, the ethnographer per excellence , who worked in their midst and brought their lives and cultures to the public view.
He came from London to India as a missionary just before 20 years of Indian independence. But he was very much fascinated to the idealism of Mahatma Gandhi and to this country. Elwin dedicated his life to those people who were neglected by the national workers and missionaries and exploited by the British Government. For his long years of sincere service, Indian Government offered him the Indian Citizenship and awarded by the nations one of the top most honor Padma Bhusan. Now this documentary presentation by Biswajeet Bora on Dr. Verrier Elwin for the first time brings to the viewers his multi-faceted life and encapsulates the art, craft, music, dance of the adivasis whose cause Dr. Elwin had so effectively espoused.
