This was just VERY stupid of that community to have allowed this. There are plenty of other places to visit in this country if the Gettysburg area wants to be dumb
I was there seeing this as a kid, I dont remember it that well, except I screamed when it happend and cried. To this day I still remember it, I miss this tower, My mom worked in a tiny red building in front of it, Vivid part of my childhood
@tritonrocks I was talking about the Cyclorama theater. An important work of 1950s architecture that the ultra 19th century "preservationists" wanted to senselessly destroy in violation of the law I might add.
@epaddon The tower was a fucking eyesore in an historic area. There was a lot of controversy when it was built (I remember). It's a lot like mounting an observation deck on top of the Titanic wreckage - doesn't respect the memory of those that died on the site. Glad it's gone.
@PaMairi Three cheers to the Recent History Preservationists who saved the Cyclorama theater for now. The colossal arrogance on the part of people who fail to recognize that building's importance as a work of importatnt architectural history, as well as the context for how it was designed in the first place just goes to show what happens when narrow-minded obsessive zeal (in this case to presume Gettysburg should look identical to 1863) takes hold.
New visitors center is dunb--far less parking spaces then old center. A money pit as they now charge to get in old center was free. One parking lot is for green vehicles and when visited in June2011 only two cars was parked there and all other lots were full and had to park 1/2 mile away
Even though is was neat to see a birds eye view of the battlefield. I really do not think that it was necessary to get the enjoyment of the visit. We returned for another visit in 1980. We did not bother with going up the tower. I do hope to revisit Gettysburg again one day. It does not bother me a bit that this tower is no longer there. Or the Cyclorama. The best part of going to Gettysburg is touring the battlefield. Nothing else is needed. I bet that it is better today.
We took a family trip to Gettysburg in 1974 when that tower was new. I was in 4th grade. I remember my mom was looking forward to seeing the battlefield from it. That tower made quite an impression on my when I was young. Gettysburg did as a whole. I became an American Civil War buff because of that trip. It was a nice part of the Gettysburg experience, but it was an ugly as hell structure. I can understand why the locals never wanted it and were happy when it was finally gone. I would be also.

Good Lord that tower was ugly. I'm very glad it's gone.
