How do you "subtract" from a selection with the rectangle tool?

By pressing Strg/Ctrl while marking your selection.

I guess you are talking about the Selection Distress. It used to be a part of Script-fu. However, in the later versions, you can find it in the menu "Selection". Look for "Distress". Good Luck!

when i use the rotate tool, a dot does not appear when i click. the whole mage statrts to roatate. Any suggestions.
