It was April 28, 1993... what better way to celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary than to round up a bunch of friends and head over to Burbank to catch Tull on the venerable show promoting their new 25th Anniversary Box Set and tour? I was in the front row for Lantern Jaw and Company (it was fascinating to watch Branford Marsalis study Ian... and vice versa... with obvious respect). And then go home and watch it on T.V. The only bummer... George Steinbrenner was on and he spent so much time talking about nothing (the Yankees sucked then)... that there was no time left at the end of the show... Tull was SUPPOSED to play Thick as a Brick at the end!!... it never happened. Screw him!! Go Dodgers!

  • Can someone tell me who is the bass player?

  • Ian reveals it in the interview just after the song... that's Matthew Pegg, son of then regular Tull bassist David Pegg. Matthew would later tour that summer playing with Procol Harum, opening for Tull's 25th Anniversary tour.

  • Ian must be very proud of this performance, captured live on rare american TV.

He was in top form that night!

  • Ian is great but it's painful watching him hit the high notes he looks like he is killing his throat. He's one of the best frontmen ever though.

  • He's still going strong 17 years later though, Odyssey. You're right however - when I see them/him live he really strains for those notes. Still (along with Arcade Fire) the best live act around.

  • Martin's guitar sound here is simply awesome. Such great sustain.

  • Who is that on the bass? Nice performance! An instrumental performance would not be such a bad idea sometimes though.

What's with the licking on the guitar solo ... good wholesome Brit fun I guess. ;-)

  • excellent video...I Just saw them in Canandiagua, NY

I have a short video of the concert on YouTube

  • It's so sad that he can't sing anymore and has to speak out his lyrics. Saw them two times, the first was a total blast because I've waited for that gig ever since I heard A Passion Play as a kid, but the second time it was all too obvious that Ian permanently lost his voice.

  • what a treat, thanks so much for putting this up

  • I am so freaking annoyed when people ask him where he got the name Jethro Tull. They ask him in EVERY SINGLE BLOODY INTERVIEW!!!

  • Wow this is great.
