@Revengeancer I think people are crueler in their cars and behind their computers than in person. I think because they feel safer. And its unfortunate that so many people are cruel enough to enjoy hurting others... racism, sexism, homophobia... and its pretty common on this site.

Wow. She's writing about her own experiences and family background, at least it influences her writing. She's never claimed to be any sort of voice for any group of people. If I write a story about a white girl would that make me a voice of white women? No, I would just be a writer talking about something I have some experience with. That is part of the reason Tan is such a great writer, she just writes about what she wants to write about, without making any grandiose claims.
