A Second Life: Living Single in Kentucky "A Second Life: Living Single in Kentucky" explores, by using three vignettes, how three older single women that have emerged from trying relationships to assert their independent creativity and sense of self while simultaneously retaining their familial bonds and central importance. The first of these vignettes features Anne Selick, a sixty-eight year old one time divorcee and widow in Louisville, Kentucky. Anne tells the story of how she encountered and eventually fostered a love of karaoke with another widowed friend. The second vignette deals with Mary Martha Barber, a ninety-two year old widow from Springfield, Kentucky. Mary originally came from California and marrying and moving at only twenty she found it hard to adjust to small town life. Despite her age she goes to lunch everyday with a group of friends and remains actively engaged and informed of all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years she has built a rock garden with the different gifts her family and friends have given her. The last vignette is about Bernelle Kendall from Tompkinsville, Kentucky. At seventy-years old and a divorcee, she uses her cooking and experimental baking as way to remain mentally active while her dog, Buddy, has become her exercise companion.
