I'm only 28, so, I can't speak to how it was TRULY percieved at the time, however, I believe that first and foremost he was criticizing Communism around the world, and how it stifles freedom. 2nd criticizing things like McCarthyism, and any other forces in the US that would use fear (of communism?) to impede our freedom. Some people think there is a deeper meaning. I just cant believe something without some type of proof. Maybe a memo he sent Bobby? Letter of concern 2 Jackie? *shrugs*
