Stifel Nicolaus is one of a handful of investment banks that continue posting profits in the ongoing economic crisis. The company has posted seven consecutive years of revenue and earnings-per-share growth; no small feat in the current economy. Chairman and CEO Ronald Kruszewski attributes that success to knowing the value of the corporations assets and avoiding the overwhelming leveraging that has brought down much larger financial giants this year. His presentation included several charts illustrating the high financial leveraging, or gearing, undertaken by major banks now in bankruptcy or facing shotgun marriages to other financial institutions. Kruszewski, has been Chairman of Stifel Financial and Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. since 2001, and has served as President and CEO of Stifel Financial Corp. and the parent firm since 1997. This presentation was part of the Darden Leadership Speaker Series, featuring world thought leaders. The individuals in the Speaker Series discuss their management philosophies and best practices, while providing expertise and advice to students, faculty, and staff. Recorded November 4, 2008.
