I heard that it is a Cockney ditty of unknown origin. I would think that it is very old and nobody is ever going to know.

I always thought it was a traditional song of unknown origin, but on a recording I have with Swedish lyrics the music is credited to a "J Spade". I don't know who he is (or likely - was).
