The Iron-Curtain between comunist countries and the West refrozen a little after 1956; not for a long time, however.
Artists from Western countries started to come to Poland and made their succesful performances here (here - for JP).
Among them, was a married in Katowice in 1936 couple of prominent singing artists: Jan Kiepura and Marta Eggerth. For Kiepura it was the first visit to Poland after 19 years and after the War which divided in two the world and the time with a special line.

Their concert took place in Kraków (Cracow) in 1958; Kiepura was not only singing together with his wife but
was also a master of the ceremony, with his special sense of humour, today much out of fashion.
The concert was transmitted by radio and my father recorded it on the little tape machine called ...Tonette.
A piece of this tape remained in a quite good condition.

Kiepura - before singing - tries to explain to the public sense and message of the duet being by them performed.

Photos presented are, however, much "younger": Kiepura from 1932, Eggerth - 1937; Polish weekly magazines; JP's, author of the video, collection.

  • Through my beloved mother I heard much about these artists but never heard their marvelous voices. Thank you for bringing this treat to me in my autumn years. Only wish my mother could enjoy it too. She grew up in Vienna while I only spent my first eight years there.

  • @lameteric

I will never forget those four days I spent in Vienna.

    Best greetings from Katowice ~!

  • An interesting piece of musical history and a cute story about the preserved recording. My old tape recorder never sounded so well!

  • How extraordinary to discover this rare piece here. And how appropriate a title. It is Bitter Sweet to hear this star couple whose careers were cut short and sent into exile due to the Nazi era. The Austro/Hungarian Empire that bore these children and The Vienna that nurtured such talent was gone never to return. There were no digital video or cd/dvd so what remains after a continent shattered by war is priceless. Thank you.
