I agree on your finding some scenes disturbing. I invited some friends round as a boy to watch the infamous creature slaughter, and we all got depressed that afternoon.
It aint a bad thing cos Tezuka put these images into kids heads to make them future humanists. He's a genious (and wasn't there a scene in Kimba the Movie where Kimba was crucified in the desert and left to bake...I only remember cos it, well, disturbs young boys). Bless.

The firebird is beautiful. Also I guess the one who voices Olga, voices the firebird

@trydowave Kinda glad for the same reason, I felt something has a kid which I couldn't quite put my finger on. Gave me nightmares also, but I can watch it alot easier now hahaha!

000xyz - this is one major story in Osaka Tesami's Phoenix cycle, where the same characters,in different incarnations, pursue the Phoenix to attain immortality - like in feudal Japan. * He also did AstroBoy, Black Jack, Simba and other cycles. Black Jack makes a guest crossover here....
I read some of these in "Manga ! Manga !" which avoids the beyond-X-rated porn and super-X-violence now so prevalent in Japan.

@EmmetEarwax they could have at least do something less stupid like going to another planet and do the terra nova thing. there is no such thing as infinate energy. there is a difference between regenerative reincarnation and immortality. funny thing though. i could have been in terra nova, but college seems more fun than running away from cgi dinosaurs
-
@In a sense this suggests the dying earth of "Terra Nova". Only here instead of going back in time to the dinosaur age, mankind seeks to capture and harness - the Phoenix Force !

you know the world is effed up when the closest thing to a mother's love you can get, is a robot at age 7, and most of your life devoid of other humans
This entire scene was omitted from the casette copy I got from a mail order firm. That also omitted a scene where helpless cat-monkeys were blasted to ashes just for target practice by soldiers.

@EmmetEarwax Yeah. I had both that version and this version. Never understood why they released one with half the film missing. I found the Cat Monkey extermination scene highly disturbing when I was younger but i'm glad (now and when i was a kid) that its in the film as it lets you know how horrible this dystopian society is.
