'Mammudha from Dust to Life' is the story of Manmatha, the god of Love in Hindu mythology (the counterpart of Cupid / Eros in Roman / Greek mythologies).
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva burns Manmatha and reduces him to dust and later brings him back to life.
This production which was staged during the december 2007 season aimed at reviving both folk arts as well as the tradition of Manmatha (who is worshipped in temples in several villages of Tamil Nadu even today), had adaptations from the traditional folk dance of Tamil Nadu and Theru Koothu (street theatre) and steps from Modern Dance. Of course the traditional classical dance, Bharatanatyam remained the thread in the garland!
Indra wields power by virtue of being appointed to the office. He symbolises `position and therefore adopts a `Theru Koothu style - a little rough at the edges, bold, bordering on the aggressive.
Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy took on the protagonist role of Manmatha with students of Shree Bharatalaya in the cast. Her very senior disciple Priya Murle plays the character of Indra, portrayed using therukoothu.
Indra persuades Manmadha to shoot the flower arrow on Lord Shiva. Manmadha refuses but later yields to Indra's persuasion.
