Recorded at The Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland on July 8 ,1978.

Walsh was all over the stage on this song going back and forth between the congas, keyboards and singing.

At the 4:10 mark the bands playing is replaced with a tape (almost seamlessly)and one by one each member laid down his instrument and walked offstage. The crowd went nuts!

I must apologize because something happened in the uploading process that makes the nearly seamless change at around 4:10 dramatically noticeable. The track on the cd sounds quite different.

Robby Steinhardt - Lead Vocals, Violin
Steve Walsh - Lead Vocals, Keys and Congas
Kerry Livgren - Guitars
Rich Williams - Guitars
Phil Ehart - Drums
Dave Hope - Bass

  • Grillbouy: How is the bass fishing on Lake Seneca? Not really my speed I need to hit things periodically (I guess I shoulda been a drummer). Who do you play with in the area?

First time I saw Kansas was for my 17th Birthday also in '76 at Cap Centre. Went straight from Lacrosse practice (remember that thing about hitting) and I was a fan.

  • The guitar player in one of the bands I'm in now is fresh off a stint in a big church band.

  • @rickyon I recall the Road Manager saying the board was a worth Quarter Million or more which is why they wanted it guarded. My first paid over nighter.

  • @rickyon Dude you haven't lived until you've sight read and sight transposed (C to Bb) Christmas Music in Church. Lots of Fun.

  • .....This is a live performance of "Sparks of the Tempest" one of several shows recorded at Merriweather Post Pavilion,Md.Those who were at the show will relate to the end of the song where the band starts to fall apart. The re-intro that occurs is actually on tape. Kansas played on,and 1 by 1 the members put down their instruments and left the stage, leaving the tape performance winding down through the house system. What an ending. (House system?) that might explain it being in the background?

  • I think I just figured out why the volume drops off when they switch to the tape. Could it be because it was post effects or after the board feed which he used for the recording and all you get is the ambient venue volume and not the tape? Just guessing. He obviously wasn't mixing for the tape because it was already mixed. Not to beat a dead horse (something I do a lot) but here's what Jeff Glixman said of this recording..."Yet another example of the band's consistency during these years......
