What I heard was McLuhan told Leary he needed a slogan, like a tv ad, for lsd. He suggested "lysergic acid hits the spot, 40,000,000 neurons, that's a lot!". Leary thought not. Next morning, while Leary showered, "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out" just "popped into his head".

It was Marshall McLuhan--not Timothy Leary--who coined the slogan, "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out". According to Dr. Leary, he picked it up from Prof. McLuhan during a conversation they had sometime in the early 1960s.
