That paper head mime and the worm thing before were mummenschanz, Some crazy german/swiss crap that was pop in the 70 and 80s. They were like the blue man crap today. They were on the Muppets show and Sesame and other shows of the time. Real crap, though they are still around today.

This is amazing. I can still remember seeing this episode on TV. The drama of the kids looking for their lost friend really stuck with me, plus the freaky toilet paper head mime is difficult to forget.
