They have been paving the mountain in sections over the past several years. The reason is not because of the competition; It's because of the damage that the tourism causes all year round. It causes a lot erosion just having cars run up and down the mountain all day.

Sadly this transition from pavement to gravel no longer exists. I drove up Pikes Peak today and the whole upper portion of gravel road has now been paved over and they said the lower portion will begin in a few weeks. Its a shame, really takes away from the uniqueness of this race.
