Ricci was my absolute favorite for years. I saw him live when I was a high school student...he played I Palpiti...and brought the house down! My violin teacher wrote the reviews for the concert and said "his hands fluttered over the fingerboard like a rag in the wind".....I got his autograph after the concert and he almost ripped the paper on the program because he wrote with such gusto and flourish. They don't make em like this anymore..all due respect to you Hilary Hahn fans , hehe.
I find all these comments about Ricci's appearance to be quite racist. Ricci looks Italian because he is Italian(-American). We have been more than boxers and gangsters for sometime now. Maybe you should check out the current line-up of the Supreme Court.
@EdGrlFromFinland Thanks for noticing. Just for fun, find a picture of Ricci without a violin & assign the following mult. choice quest: What was this man's profession? {A} teacher; {B} doctor; {C} boxer; {D} violinist. I've never done this, but I'd say that C would get the most responses.
Listen to the 2nd mov. & tell me if it doesn't sound like the Sicilian folk music in Godfather II, when Michael is getting married. Though all are great, this is now the Paganini I listen to most.
Ricci looks like he's related to Tony Soprano! Had I not known his reputation as a violinist I'd swear that he packed a Tommy gun in his fiddle case. In his early years he had the face of a prize fighter with looks a lot like Rocky Marciano. As a violinist, his playing resembles his looks; bold, aggressive, & brilliant. He has always been among my favorite violinists. His bow arm is loaded with testosterone. There is nothing mediocre or timid about his playing. He plays the violin like a champ.
