protists are quite intelligent.
I have this theory thats supported by some research (although non was done to disprove it)
that neurons are capble of higher levels of information proceccing between the axon hillock and the dendrite than summing depolarization and maintaining their structure / connections.

they can probably finetune actionpotentials and have some form of memory in the soma.

When the cells have ran out of food, they begin to link up like this in search of food. Irf they find it, than they go back to being individuals again

actually after they find food they move in the slug state to a suitable climate (damp and warm) and morph again into a mushroom shaped organism before releasing spores which then become amoeba and then repeat the cycle seen above. Once they have aggregated they're no longer separable.
